Kapitel 15
Der 2. Weihnachtsfeiertag war ein "Day of Rest", um im amerikanischen Sprachgebrauch, einen ruhi-
gen Tag zu beschreiben, wo man nichts tat, als nur rumliegen, dösen, sich entspannen, und viel schla-
fen. Roland und Ute merkten nun schon ihre knapp sechzig Jahre; die Natur lässt sich nicht belügen.
Man schlief lang, brauchte ewig im Bad, aß nicht zu viel. Sie machten einen kurzen Spaziergang an der
kalten, frischen Winterluft, und freuten sich schon auf die Couch im Wohnzimmer. Einzig ein Klingeln
von Rolands Mobiltelefon um kurz nach Vier (16:00 Uhr) unterbrach den bislang stillen Tag. Es war
Benjamin, der sich mit "Hi Roland, this is Ben, how are you doing?", meldete. Roland grinste und freute
sich Ben zu hören: "Oh, hi, Ben, it's good to hear you. I'm doing fine, and you? How's Julie?"
"We are at work, like any other day too!", kam die teasing voice back from Benjamin. "I guess you are
still enjoying a holyday and being off from work, isn't it?", kam von ihm.
Die Amis hatten keinen zweiten Weihnachtfeiertag, kam es nun Roland allmählich, so sagte er mo-
ckingly: "Poor folks! We have a second holyday here. Lazy day!"
Worauf Benjamin konterte: "Lazy folks in Germany, that's why we make the millions here in the States!"
und lachte dabei lauthals.
Ben war immer in guter Laune, ein typischer Amerikaner, wie Roland dachte. Er mochte das. Die Amis
waren nicht nur oft in guter Laune, sie waren auch immer optimistisch, ein Trait, zu Deutsch "Wesens-
zug", der den Deutschen oft fehlt. Ein typischer Deutscher der schimpft und jammert, dachte er, und
wunderte sich, wie es so etwas gab.
"Ben, really, it's so good to hear you, thanks for calling." (Roland)
"It's good to hear you too, you know that, isn't it?" (Ben)
"Is Julie also around?" (Roland)
"No, she's still at home, has a day off, and is packing. You know, how women are. She's excited to go
for our trip to Germany and to see you and Ute again." (Ben)
"You are departing on Wednesday, isn't it? We will pick you up on Thursday morning German time at
9 o'clock, like your flight is scheduled." (Roland)
"Would be appreciated. But please keep in mind that we are going through Atlanta, so please look not
for Boston. It's Delta Flight 130." (Ben)
"Ben, may I ask why you are not using the Lear Jet from your firm? Last time you came for a visit you
went by it, right?" (Roland)
"Yeap, you remember correct. But Julie insisted not to spoil the x-mas holydays of the pilot crew and so
I gave in." (Ben)
