Customize your Project Plan
by tailoring Smartsheet
1. Preface
This training manual was created because I could not find a book nor a website either, that explains
the Smartsheet software in a concise way, how to handle project management, in particular a project
plan. Though you can find very complex and comprehensive help on terms or formulas on the Internet,
but in my opinion, this is not suitable for a didactically understanding of handling a project manage-
ment system, especially in the automotive supply industry, which is supposed to be mapped in Smart-
sheet.
I have chosen "Customize your Project Plan by tailoring Smartsheet " as title, because in this book I
describe the individual creation of a project plan in Smartsheet in a way that may suit your needs.
Mainly I use a small case study as a guide and practical reference. You can also practically reproduce
everything described in the book by using the "30-day trial version", appreciatively provided by Smart-
sheet Inc.
I have written this training manual in two languages: this book here, in US English, as well another book
in my native language, German, with exactly the same content, also available at Amazon beneath the
title "Erstellung eines Projektplans mit Smartsheet ". Reason is that you may work in international
projects where are also Germans involved.
A second reason, in addition to the common language, is that Smartsheet also adapts to the language
requirements of the individual countries concerning formulas. For instance, what is comma in the Eng-
lish setting, is then a semicolon in a formula in German. Functions (e.g., IF, VLOOKUP, ...) also have
their peculiarities, because these are exclusively in English and are specific to the Smartsheet software.
I would also like to emphasize that this book reflects only my personal opinion and my personal expe-
rience from over twenty years as a project manager in the automotive supply industry. It is not in-
tended to endorse any company, institution, or someone else, either.
My intention is to help colleagues to manage their project management. I didn't write this book to
make money. I had no editor / proofreader available. I just followed my dream to teach people through
two similar textbooks in a bilingual way to reach all interested ones.
Yours sincerely
